Welcome to Hello English Pronunciation Class. In this series we will share common words and their correct pronunciations. To know the correct pronunciation of the following words, click on the link at the end.
1. Engineer (en-juh-nea vs in- jee- near)
A person who designs or builds engines, machines and structures
Remember that 'En' is pronounced as 'en' not 'in' and 'gi' is pronounced as 'juh' not 'jee'. We do not stress on the ‘R’ .
2. Tour (too-uhr vs toor): A journey or a short trip
Remember, we stress on 'ur' and read it as 'too-uhr'.
3. Iron (aye-en/aye-urn vs eye-run): It is both a silver metal and the machine that is used to smooth clothes
We pronounce it as 'Aye-en' because 'R' is silent.
4. Almond (ah-mund vs al-mond): The oval shaped nut widely used as food
We pronounce it as 'ah-mund' because 'L' is silent.
‘l’ is silent.
5. Women (wih - men vs woo-men): Adult human females
'Wo' is pronounced as 'Woo' and not 'wih' or 'wee'. Thus, we say 'Woo-men'.
6. Parent (pay- rint vs paey rint): Refers to the father or mother of a child
Remember the 'Pa' in this word is pronounced as 'pay' and not 'pae'. Thus, we say 'pay-rint'.
