"Never look a gift horse in the mouth." (मुफ्त के बैल के दाँत क्या देखना/ दान की बछिया के दाँत नहीं देखे जाते)

यह कहावत आज भी उतनी ही उपयुक्त है जितनी यह पहले के समय में हुआ करती थी।

घोड़े एक बहुत ही उपयोगी पशु है। जैसे जैसे घोड़ों की उम्र बढ़ती है, उनके दांतों की संख्या में वृद्धि होती है और उनके shape भी बदलने लगते हैं। कुछ लोग घोड़ों के दांत देखकर उनकी आयु, उपयोगिता और उनका मूल्य बता देते हैं ।This practice is also the source of the expression “long in the tooth,” meaning old.

A gift horse is a horse that was a gift, quite simply. When given a horse, it would be bad manners to inspect the horse's mouth to see if it has bad teeth. (दिया गया घोड़ा उपयोगी है या नहीं। अधिक उम्र होने पर घोड़ों की कार्य क्षमता भी कम हो जाती है।) इसलिए कहा जाता है कि Don't question the value of a gift. क्योंकि gift तो gift है, उसके लिए उसका मूल्य या उसकी हमारे जीवन में उपयोगिता नहीं देखनी चाहिए।

जब हमें कोई उपहार (gift) देता है तो हमें उस gift के लिए आभारी होना चाहिए। दिए गए proverb में हमें यही advice दी गयी है कि gift मिलने पर उसके लिए अपना आभार व्यक्त करें ना कि अपनी अभिलाषाओं के अनुरूप gift चाहें और उसके मूल्य का आंकलन करें। यह एक अभद्र आचरण है। Don't inspect the gift to make sure it matches some standard you have, just be grateful!
