‘Used To’ : How To Use It Correctly?

Some say that ‘Used to‘ is a phrasal verb while some say it’s a modal verb.
Well, whatever it is, it’s surely one hell of aconfusion.
OKAY, let’s not get into the technicalities and try to understand the usage of this expressionin a simple way.
USED TO एक ऐसा English expression है जिसका हमने आम बोल चाल में काफी बार प्रयोग किया भी है और लोगों को करते सुना भी है, मगर हम में से कुछ अभी भी इस confusion से घिरें हैं कि इसका सही इस्तेमाल कैसे किया जाता है?
One of our readers asked us to write a blog on this topic which made me realize that how often these simple expressions can cause astir in the minds of a learner.
इस expression का प्रयोग different situations में अलग-अलग तरह से किया जाता है।
To sum up, it is used infollowing ways andcontexts:
PAST REGULARITY
पुरानी आदतें या अतीत में दोहराए जाने वाले कार्य जिन्हें हम वर्तमान में नहीं करते।
(Something that happened regularly in the past but not anymore)
• Before marriage, Iused to go out with my friends every weekend.
• विवाह से पहले, मैं हर सप्ताहांत अपने दोस्तों के साथ बाहर घूमने जाता था
• I used to do theatre in my college days.
• मैं अपने कॉलेज के दिनों में थिएटर करता था।
NOTE: Here, always useinfinitive form of the verb. ( we used ‘go’ and ‘do’ )
OBSOLETE STATUS
एक तथ्य या एक स्थिति जो अतीत में थी लेकिन अब नहीं है।
(Something that was true in the past but no longer is)
• He used to live in London, but now he lives in New York
• वह पहले London में रहता था लेकिन अब वह New York में रहता है।
• She used to like Sam but now she hates him.
• पहले वह Sam को पसंद करती थी लेकिन अब वह उससे नफरत करती है।
NOTE: Again, use infinitive form of the verb – live, like.
AN OLD PERSISTENT HABIT
लंबे समय से किसी कार्य को करने के या किसी अनुभव के आदी होना।
(Things we are familiarwith or things that we have a habit of doing since a long time)
• I’m used to studying newspaper every morning.
• मुझे हर सुबह अखबार पढ़ने की आदत है।
• I’m used to sleeping late on the Sundays.
• मुझे रविवार के दिन देर तक सोने की आदत है।
NOTE: use ‘ing’ form of the verb.( Here we used ‘studying = study+ing‘ and ‘sleeping = sleep +ing’ )
A NEWLY FORMED (PRESENT) HABIT
एक असामान्य स्थिति के आदी हो जाना या नई आदत बन जाना।
(To get accustomed to an unusual situation or to make a new habit)
• I am used to London’s cold weather now.
• मुझे अब London के ठन्डे मौसम की आदत पड़ चुकी है।
• I have become used tohis short-tempered behavior.
• मुझे उसके चिड़चिड़े स्वभाव कि आदत हो गयी है।
NOTE: Always use an ‘auxiliary verb‘ with the subject = He is, I am, They are, She has, Theyhave, etc.
FUTURE HABIT POSSIBILITY
जब संभावना हो कि आप वक़्त के साथ किसी unusual व नई स्थिति के अनुसार ढल जाएंगे या कोई ऐसी आदत बना लेंगे जो पहले नहीं थी।
(The possibility ofadapting to a situation or a habit in near future)
• If you live in England, you will get used todriving on the left.
• यदि आप England में रहते हैं, तो आपको बाईं तरफ गाड़ी चलाने की आदत हो जाएगी।
• You should drink alcohol in moderation or else you will get used to it.
• आपको कम मात्रा में शराब पीनी चाहिए वरना आपको इसकी आदत पड़ जाएगी।
NOTE: Future possibility = will get + used to
In a nutshell, we can talk about things in the past or the future, as well as the present, using this expression.
